Chicago Nuns and Allies Confront ICE on the 100th Day of the Obama Administration

Published: Friday, April 24, 2009
After 2 1/2 years of weekly vigils and repeated rebuffs to their requests to pray with the detainees inside, a pair of spry elderly nuns and their allies are announcing plans to block the driveway at Broadview in an act of interfaith prayer and civil disobedience. The action will take place at 11 AM on April 30, the 100th day of the Obama Administration. Sister JoAnn Persch, RSM, 78, and Sister Pat Murphy, RSM, 80, of the Sisters of Mercy have conducted prayer vigils every Friday morning, without fail and in all weather, since December 2006. The sisters, along with religious leaders from the Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, and Muslim faiths, and other allies including staff and members of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, have now decided to risk arrest to force the issue with ICE.
