January 2012 Visa Bulletin: Good news for EB-2s

immigration visa eb-2 eb-3 permanent resident priority date chicago attorney green cardThis month’s visa bulletin will give some cheer to Indian and Chinese nationals currently waiting in EB-2. Their priority dates moved a total of 292 days this month, and now rest at January 1, 2009. Altogether, priority dates for these individuals have moved more than a year during the past four months. But foreign nationals from the rest of the world who have recently been approved in EB-2 should also count their blessings, since priority dates in this category have remained current for some time along with those for all individuals in the EB-1 category.

Unfortunately, the news in EB-3 is mostly dreary. Dates are moving, but more slowly than the passage of time, meaning further extension of backlogs and wait times. Of all countries, only China’s EB-3 priority date moved forward in pace with the calendar.

In the family-based categories, plodding progress continues. For all countries except Mexico and the Philippines, priority dates in the F-1 category (unmarried children of U.S. citizens) moved a pleasant 44-45 days. The F-2A category (spouses and minor children of Green Card holders) moved a solid 31 days forward for all countries except Mexico, which enjoyed a 42-day bump. F-1 has been backlogged significantly farther than F-2A for some time now, and there is no sign of change on the horizon.

Across the world, priority dates in F-2B (unmarried children of Green Card holders) and F-3 (married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens) moved less than 30 days forward during the past calendar month, adding another few days to the already lengthy waits in these categories. The F-4 category (siblings of U.S. citizens) kept pace with the march of time for all countries except Mexico, where dates barely moved once again.
