Each month, the U.S. Department of State issues a bulletin summarizing the availability of immigrant numbers for the upcoming calendar month. When a foreign national receives approval for his or her I-130 or I-140 immigrant petition, the date that petition was received by USCIS becomes that individual's "priority date".
In many family-based and employment-based categories, there are more approved applications for permanent resident status than available openings. Potential immigrants in these categories must wait for their priority dates to become "current" before applying for an immigrant visa (if residing outside the U.S.) or adjustment of status to permanent resident (if already present in the U.S.)
The visa bulletin lets those waiting in queue know which priority dates will be open for processing in the coming month. For the latest bulletin and links to visa bulletins for prior months, please click here.
